The Indonesia Young Fashion Designer Competition (IYFDC) is one of the key talent development programs within the BTN Indonesia Fashion Week 2026 series, which will take place from July 29 to August 2, 2026, at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC).
This year, BTN Indonesia Fashion Week carries the grand theme “Ulos Simetria,” a collaborative initiative between APPMI, BTN, the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Dekranasda North Sumatra, and the North Sumatra Provincial Tourism and Culture Office.
For the 2026 edition, IYFDC adopts the theme “Threads of North Sumatra: Tradition in Contemporary Silhouette,” inviting young designers to explore the rich cultural heritage of North Sumatra through its textiles, motifs, colors, and philosophical values. Participants are challenged to reinterpret these traditional elements into contemporary fashion designs that resonate with the evolving global fashion industry.
‘Threads of North Sumatra’ Chosen as the Theme of IYFDC 2026 to Shape the Next Generation of Fashion Designers
Misan Kopaka, APPMI Vice Chairman for Education, Training, and Development, as well as a judge for IYFDC 2026, explained that the theme was selected to encourage young designers to explore Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage through a fresh and contemporary perspective.

“This year, IYFDC adopts the theme Threads of North Sumatra: Tradition in Contemporary Silhouette. It invites young designers to explore the cultural richness of North Sumatra through its textiles, motifs, colors, and philosophical values, and reinterpret them into modern silhouettes that are both effortless and sophisticated,” said Misan.
During the semifinal stage, the judging panel evaluated participants based on four key criteria: design aesthetics, craftsmanship, wearability, and commercial viability. Following the assessment process, 12 finalists were selected for demonstrating strong potential to transform cultural heritage into fashion products that combine creative value with commercial appeal.
IYFDC Goes Beyond Competition, Serving as a Development Platform for Indonesia’s Next Generation of Designers

Poppy Dharsono, Chairwoman of APPMI and President of BTN Indonesia Fashion Week, emphasized that IYFDC is not solely focused on identifying winners, but also serves as a platform to nurture the next generation of Indonesian fashion designers.
“The objective of IYFDC is to develop young designers with talent and potential, enabling them to grow within the fashion industry and gain opportunities to compete on the international stage,” said Poppy Dharsono.
According to her, Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage provides an invaluable source of inspiration for young designers to create works with a strong identity while remaining relevant to the demands of the modern fashion market.
Meanwhile, Naniek Rachmat, APPMI Vice Treasurer, Finance Director of BTN Indonesia Fashion Week, and a judge for IYFDC 2026, explained that the selection process was conducted through several stages to identify the most promising talents deserving of further development.
“We are not simply looking for winners. We are looking for young talents with the potential to grow and become part of the future of Indonesia’s fashion industry,” said Naniek.
